First and foremost, people who say she needs to die or be raped for her video are retarded. You do not do that to somebody because they made a video
Secondly people saying that she should be jailed are also retarded. She was excersising her right to free expression. Albeit expression of ideas that are half baked to say the least. She cannot and should not be jailed for exercising her constitutional right.
But even beyond those obvious overreactions I think anyone who does anything other than laugh and move on with their life is guilty of being just as stupid.
For example people who say that they won’t go to UCLA anymore just because of this video. Their are a number of reasons why this is stupid. For one, UCLA is a HUGE campus with thousands of students. There’s a good chance that you may never see her, and even if you do it shouldn’t be to hard to find someone else to kick it with. Also as it is a college there are a TON of different majors so you probably wouldn’t even see her in any of your classes. Even if you do have her in one of your classes its not like you have to talk to her in the lecture hall.
But really is there anything to even be angry about? Maybe she is not the one making the problem. This wouldn’t be a big deal if everybody didn’t make it one. Sure she said some racist things, but really why should racist words —especially in a youtube video— offend intelligent people? Instead of getting all riled up and trying to defend your race’s honor maybe you should feel sorry for her or at least just think its funny.
Racism is pure ignorance and I don’t know about everybody else but when someone does something ignorant that doesn’t harm me or anybody else I just laugh and feel a little bit sorry for them.
Why should I look at verbal racists differently than I do any other ignorant fool? They’re really not making the race that they insult look any worse, they’re just embarrassing themselves.
Besides, if you really think about it, how much of her racist attitudes are really her fault? She is young enough that most of her attitudes are probably not her own but rather a product of her upbringing.
Basically I think that everyone who hates on this girl for her video (which she withdrew and apologized for once she realized that it upset people) needs to take a deep breath and take a step back and realize that as ridiculous as her video was, they are just as ridiculous for wishing her harm when instead they should be hoping for her enlightenment. How can we teach her that hating is bad by firing back more hate at her? We can’t. You can’t get rid of hate with more hate, only by sharing your tolerance and understanding with those who hate you.
As for the matter of what the school should do about her little rant, I think it depends. If her video violated the student code of conduct then I would have to agree with the vast majority of the people who are calling for her expulsion. Otherwise I think she should be allowed to continue on with her studies.
As for what we should do about it? I think we all need to drop the torches and pitchforks and reach out to her. Asian people especially. Her racism only reveals how much she needs a little immersion into Asian culture. She’s obviously had some bad influences on her life but we shouldn’t give up on her yet. All she needs is a couple of decent people to befriend her and teach her that what she said was not at all cool so that she can become a more enlightened and loved citizen of these United States.
So come on folks, lets stop the hate.
